A few months after I was born (Sept 1980), my parents moved us to Clinton, TN (just outside of Knoxville). They've lived in that house ever since. I spent 7 years at Tennessee Tech, first majoring in chemical engineering and then late in the game changing majors to sociology; I graduated with both degrees in 2005, toured Europe for a month, and then moved to Massachusetts for grad school. New England was a good place to spend the next 7 years and I earned my PhD in sociology in 2012. My first job out of grad school was at Louisiana Tech; but after a few years, I knew I needed to move on. I never expected to move back to Tennessee, but a job opened up at UTC looking for an environmental sociologist ("that's me!" I said) and so in 2016 I found myself in Chattanooga. But after a few more years I decided that maybe academia wasn't for me after all. I now work remotely as a data scientist for a health care nonprofit based in Washington, DC. And then this summer I got "un-retired" from teaching when my alma mater asked me to teach (online) a research methods course for them. And I suppose the lesson from all of this is that you just never know where life will take you!
I was a foster parent for about 3 years, mostly to teenage boys, and most of whom had significant trauma histories. That was intense, especially for a single parent, and a little over a year ago I decided to call it quits. I now channel all that parenting energy into my sister's kids; being an uncle is probably the Best Role Ever. I currently live on Signal Mountain where my dog (Abernathy) helps me manage a 200 square foot backyard garden plus a small fruit orchard. In my spare time I like to play piano, spin poi, play board games (I host a weekly Pandemic Legacy game with a couple of friends), and make interesting food. Shawn
